Giving Compass MCP

Ask your AI about any nonprofit. It answers from the data.

Connect Claude or ChatGPT to Giving Compass and ask in plain English. Your assistant gets everything behind Compass Explorer: 1.9 million nonprofits with every 990 on file, plus impact reports, Charity Navigator ratings, grants, leadership and pay, programs, community data, and Giving Compass articles. Every answer says what it assumed and what it ran.

Included with Giving Compass Pro. Works with Claude and ChatGPT.

How it works

Every answer shows its work

Your assistant isn't guessing from training data. A Giving Compass analyst runs the question against the data and reports back with its assumptions, its changes, and its queries.

  • It declares its assumptions

Where your question leaves room, the analyst decides and says so. Each choice is labeled: you specified it, or we interpreted it. Disagree, and you refine.

  • Refine without starting over

Every analysis has an id. Say what to change, and everything else is preserved exactly. Each refinement lists what changed since the last revision.

  • Verify any figure

Each research reply ends with the exact queries that ran. Ask your assistant to check a number and it can, against the actual data.

Analysis manifest · revision 2Illustrative
Objective

The ten largest food banks in Washington by latest-990 revenue, among those over $5M.

Cohort

You specified Washington · revenue over $5M · latest 990

We interpreted "food bank" as NTEE K31 (Food Banks & Pantries) plus the Hunger & Food Security issue area

Time period

You specified Each organization's most recent filing on record

Limitations

Organizations that file a 990-N report no revenue and are not included.

Changed in revision 2: excluded two regional distributors you flagged as pass-through. Everything else preserved. 3 queries run

Questions

Good to know

Which assistants work?

Claude on the web and desktop (and on your phone once it's added), and ChatGPT on the web with developer mode on. Any assistant that supports remote MCP connectors with sign-in can connect to the same URL.

Do I need a Giving Compass account?

Yes, a Giving Compass Pro account. You sign in once while connecting. Free accounts can't connect yet.

Is it the same data as Compass Explorer?

Yes. Same data, same analyst. The difference is where you ask and which assistant writes the final answer.

How long does an answer take?

Lookups return in seconds. Research questions run real queries and usually take 15 to 90 seconds; your assistant shows progress while it works.

Can it change anything on my account?

No. It reads nonprofit data on your behalf and nothing else. It can't edit your account, your lists, or your settings.

How do I disconnect?

Remove the connector in Claude or ChatGPT. Access ends there; there's nothing to undo on Giving Compass.

Can I see what my assistant ran?

Every research reply ends with a manifest of its assumptions and the exact queries it ran. Ask your assistant to show them.

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI assistants use outside tools and data. Giving Compass runs an MCP server; your assistant connects to it.
