About

We are seeking patient, friendly, and culturally sensitive volunteers to support English language learners through informal conversation practice. As an ESL Conversation Tutor, you will help learners build their confidence in speaking English, improve their pronunciation and vocabulary, and gain a deeper understanding of everyday language use..

ESL volunteers must have the below skills/abilities:

  • Strong command of spoken and written English.

  • Good listening and communication skills.

  • Patience, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.

  • Prior teaching or tutoring experience is a plus, but not required.

+ Essential Role Functions

  • Facilitate one-on-one or small group conversation sessions.

  • Encourage learners to speak about familiar topics such as family, work, hobbies, and current events.

  • Provide gentle corrections and guidance on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

  • Foster a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment.

  • Track attendance and provide brief session summaries.

+ Education and Experience

  • Prior teaching or tutoring experience is a plus, but not required.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

+ Requirements

  • Time commitment is one or two hours per week for a duration of a minimum of three months.

  • All volunteers must pass a criminal background check and an informal interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.

  • Being empathetic and non-judgemental.

+ Schedule & Location

  • Meetings can be in-person/online/hybrid either at our location or at the local Pontiac Library. Flexible schedule depending on both parties’ availability.

We are a private, not-for-profit, mission-driven organization that provides comprehensive services to a diverse community. While most of the clients we serve now are of Latin descent, we strive to offer services to a broader cultural community. We are proud to be able to offer culturally and linguistically competent services in the areas of mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, victims of crime advocacy, parenting education, health education and promotion, wellness workshops, Exito Educativo and support and interpretation for pregnant women at St Joseph’s Women Center.
