Each year, an estimated 25,000 youth across the U.S. emancipate or "age out" of the foster care system, and are at risk of having few adult supports or job opportunities. Safe Families PLUS (Providing Lasting Unconditional Support) Mentors are key partners in helping older youth successfully transition to adulthood. Mentors are paired with a youth or young adult between the ages of 14 to 21, and are expected to commit to at least a year of meeting on a consistent basis (twice per month). Mentors provide a safety net to fall back on after leaving the child welfare system.
All Safe Families PLUS mentees have completed an application requesting a mentor, and have identified goals they would like support in. Some of the activities our mentors have assisted youth with:
-Cooking and sewing classes
-Applying to college
-Seeing theater productions and movies
-Exploring job opportunities
-Learning how to drive
You can be the difference for one person to succeed!
